The Story of Randy Savage and Miss Elizabeth

Fans of 1980s wrestling are certainly familiar with one of the all-time icons of the sport, Randy Savage. In the 80s, wrestling was becoming more and more flamboyant. Wild outfits, crazy personas, specific intro music, and gorgeous female managers (valets.) Randy Savage and his valet, Miss Elizabeth, were almost synonymous.

How Randy Poffo Became Macho Man Randy Savage:

Randy Poffo was born into wrestling as his father was the legendary Angelo Poffo. But Randy grew up loving baseball and signed with the St. Louis Cardinals upon graduation from high school. While in development in the minor leagues as a pitcher, he sustained an injury to his throwing arm, which ended his baseball career. After that dream ended, he decided to follow in his father’s footsteps and began training as a professional wrestler.

In 1993, he was introduced as a character called “The Spider,” which was a take-off of Spider Man. This name was changed, as it didn’t represent his aggressive nature in the ring, so he changed his wrestling name to Macho Man Randy Savage under the guidance of Vince McMahon. At this point, Savage was in great demand.

Around this time, beautiful women became an important part of a wrestler’s entourage. Valets, as they were called, would accompany the wrestler to the ring; in time, many of these women became as well known as their wrestling counterpoints, and this was the case with the beautiful Miss Elizabeth.

Who was Miss Elizabeth:

Miss Elizabeth was born Elizabeth Ann Hulette in 1960. While working at wrestling venues, she met Randy Savage and began working as his valet, though many more well-known managers were vying to work with him. Throughout their time working in the wrestling industry, there were numerous feuds, complex romantic storylines, and plenty of fun for wrestling fans. After other wrestlers’ storylines revolved around them trying to take away Miss Elizabeth, a wedding between Savage and Miss Elizabeth was performed in the ring in 1991, though they had already been married for years.

A Sad Goodbye:

Unfortunately, the industry can be difficult for partners that work together, and Randy and Elizabeth divorced in 1992.

At that time, Randy went to the WCW; Miss Elizabeth seemed to disappear from the industry. She would make occasional appearances like in the 1996 special Clash of the Champions, which included a match between Hulk Hogan and Savage. From that point, Elizabeth began a relationship with pro wrestler Lex Luger.

On May 2, 2003, Miss Elizabeth died of a drug/alcohol overdose. Savage remarried and lived several more years until he had a heart attack while driving and died on May 20, 2011.
