Early Life & Education – Gugu was born as Gugulethu Sophia Mbatha-Raw on April 21, 1983, in Oxford, Oxfordshire. Her father, Patrick Mbatha is a doctor by profession whereas her mother named Anne Raw is a nurse.

The actress went to Henry Box School where she found her interest in acting, dancing, and musical theatre. She subsequently joined National Youth Theatre where she started performing. After school, she attended the prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.
