Emma Mackey was born on 4 January 1996 in Le Mans, France. She is the daughter of Philippe, a school headmaster, and Rachel, a volunteer at a charity. She grew up with her sibling in Sablé-sur-Sarthe. In 2013, she earned a French baccalauréat degree after which she moved to England where she attended the University of Leeds to study English Language and Literature.
