With soccer being one of the biggest sports in the world, it is no shock that several celebrities have invested in clubs. Some world-famous singers and actors like to put their hands into soccer clubs or even create their own.
We have decided to take a look at some of the best and weirdest celebrity soccer investments.
Wrexham – Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney
Wrexham are one of the oldest clubs in the history of English Football being in 1864. With most celebrity investments it is nothing more than an endorsement but with Ryan and Rob, it was a full-scale takeover of the club.
They became co-owners of the club and projected the club into stardom. With more eyes than ever, they won their first title in 45 years, gained promotion and got a document try released about the club called ‘Welcome To Wrexham’ which was then nominated for an Emmy. Everything surrounding the investment was perfect and will continue to get better.
Inter Miami – David Beckham
In 2014 became co-owner of what would become Inter Miami. After nearly a decade of ownership, the club signed Lionel Messi on a free transfer, arguably the biggest deal in MLS history, the ‘Messi effect’ was quickly shown by the 1200% increase in Google searches and the 5 million Instagram followers the club gained.
With Messi’s debut came a host of massive names and a late winner which moved the co-owner, Beckham, to tears. With people like Lebron James and Serena Williams watching on from the stands, it was a massive turning point for the MLS and soccer in America.
Birmingham City – Tom Brady
This is arguably the most confusing one on the list, with the American Footballing legend getting a minority stake in Championship side Birmingham. A very confusing deal, with knowledge of sport and soccer we would assume Tom Brady would make a bigger move, even if you were to bet on football it would have been very hard to predict this deal happening.
Watford – Elton John
This is one of the most authentic ones we will talk about today as Elton John and Watford have a joint love for each other and a love that has spanned decades. It all started when Elton John used Vicarage Road as a concert venue that hosted 30,000 during a financially troubled period in Watford’s history and raised a lot of money for the club. When Watford reached an FA Cup final in 1984, Abide by Me played and the then-chairman was moved to tears. After stepping down in 2002, he is still widely loved and remembered and even has a stand named after him.
Swansea – Mindy Kaling
Perhaps the most random addition to the list, ‘The Office’ and ‘The Mindy Project’ star gained 68% of the ownership when she was a part of an American consortium. The team was struggling when they bought it and has since got worse having seen managers and around 11 managers and a relegation it has not been the best investment.
Conclusion
With Soccer growing in America year by year it feels like it won’t be long until more actors and actresses invest in clubs around the world. Actors like Timothee Chamalet loving football means we could see him invest in one soon and that is the case for a lot of actors now. As football grows as a sport and gets more worldwide, it will always be a great investment for celebs. Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney have proved there is a formula to being successful with your soccer investments and we expect a plethora of people to follow their suit.
