Early Life & Education – She was born on March 2, 1997, in Inglewood, California, to Francisco “Frank” Gomez and Alejandra “Alex” (née Esquivias). She is the eldest of three siblings. They grew up in Moreno Valley. During her childhood, her family lost their home due to financial problems and had to live with her grandparents. She started working part-time jobs in order to support financially her family. She went to a public school but had to leave it because she experienced bullying. After that, she started homeschooling and completed her education.
Career – At the age of eleven, she appeared in a short film titled El Tux, and subsequently starred as Nina in the American drama La estación de la Calle Olvera. During this time, she joined a girl group named G.L.A.M. for which she later filmed a music video for a song named JellyBean. Additionally, she started recording herself and uploading covers of popular songs on YouTube. Later, she posted some of her original songs titled Otis, Lighters, Nocacane, Take Care, Boyfriend, and Mi Tierra along with the duo The Jam.
Her song Otis caught the attention of famous record producer Dr. Luke who was really impressed by her singing. He later met her and offered her a deal under his record label Kemosabe Records in a joint venture with RCA Records. She released her first song titled Problem which later served as a promotional single for the Sony Pictures Animation film Hotel Transylvania. She then collaborated with Australian singer Cody Simpson for the song Wish You Were Here and British singer Cher Lloyd for the song Oath.
Her official single debut came in 2013 under the title Becky from the Block which was a cover of Jennifer Lopez’s single Jenny from the Block. Later that same year, she released her debut extended play, also titled Play It Again. The album had five songs and the name of this album was given by Gomez’s fans. Her next song Cant Get Enough featured American rapper Pitbull which served as the lead single from the album.
