Early Life & Education – Vera Ann Farmiga was born on August 6, 1973, in Clifton, New Jersey, to Michael Farmiga, who worked as a system analyst-turned landscaper and her mother Lubomyra “Luba” (née Spas) was a school teacher. She has an older brother and five younger siblings. She went to St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic School in Newark where she was a member of Syzokryli (a Ukrainian folk-dancing ensemble). Vera then attended Hunterdon Central Regional High School and graduated in 1991.
Career – While attending High School, she became interested in acting after being convinced by her friend to give an audition for the school play titled The Vampire where she won the main role of Lady Margaret. After this, she enrolled at Syracuse University to study Theatre and graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1995. During her final year, she appeared in several productions including The Seagull at the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival.
Vera’s television career took off in 1997 when she was cast to play the main role of Catlin in the fantasy adventure Roar. The series was not renewed for the second season due to negative responses, and the last five episodes were not telecast by the network until 2000. Following Roar, she appeared playing Emily Elliot in the television film Rose Hill in the same year. She then had an episode appearance in the American legal drama Law & Order in 1998.
That same year, she marked her film career as well by portraying a supporting role as Kerrie in the drama-thriller Return to Paradise which also stars Vince Vaughn and Joaquin Phoenix. She then was seen essaying important roles as Miriam Kelly and Lisa Tyler in The Opportunists and Autumn in New York in 2000.
Her career’s major breakthrough role came in 2004 when she played Irene Morrison in the drama film Down to the Bone. Her performance received widespread appreciation, and also won several awards and nominations including Sundance Film Festival Special Jury Prize for Acting.
