Early Life & Education – Shailta Grant was born on August 28, 1988, in Petersburg, Virginia, United States. The information about her parents is not known yet, except it was her mother who encouraged her to pursue a career in acting.
She went to Appomattox Regional Governor’s School For the Arts and Technology in Petersburg, Virginia. Thereafter, she attended Baltimore School for the Arts in Maryland, where she became the YoungArts Winner in Theater and Presidential Scholar in the Arts. Later, she was granted a scholarship to study acting at the prestigious Juilliard School where she earned a degree in Bachelor of Fine Arts in Drama in 2010.
Career – Having completed graduation, she began performing at The Public Theatre’s early in 2010 which includes The Merchant of Venice, Measure for Measure, and The Winter’s Tale. Later, she performed in Christopher Durang’s comedy play titled “Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike” as Cassandra. She won the prestigious Theatre World Award for ‘Outstanding Broadway Debut’ and a Tony Award nomination for the ‘Best Featured Actress in a Play.
Tony Award nomination earned her fame and popularity and even led her to move to Los Angeles to pursue a television career. Though achieving success on Television was not easy for her, it took almost 54 auditions in a year to get a role in the American crime drama NCIS: New Orleans where she was seen portraying Sonja Percy. Prior to this, she had worked in two TV series titled The Good Wife (2011) and Bones (2014-2015).
Shalita made guest appearances in several TV shows including portraying Evita Freeman in Melissa & Joey (2015), Olivia in Battle Creek (2015), and Sonja Percy in NCIS (2016). She then bagged a recurring role as Aurelia Johnson in the first season of the ‘PBS’ medical drama ‘Mercy Street’. She then appeared as Agent Tess Rogers in the third season of horror-comedy Santa Clarita Diet almost three years later.
Her early films credits include an Oscar-nominated short documentary Rehearsing a Dream (2006) and two other short films titled Empire Corner (2010) and Invisible (2010).
