McHale was born on November 20, 1971, in Rome to the American-born father, Jack McHale, and Candian-born, Laurie McHale (nee Jackson). He received his elementary education at Mercer Island High School and subsequently graduated from the prestigious University of Washington in 1995.
In 1984, He joined the cast of a local sketch comedy television show Almost Live!. From 1993 to 1997, he was a part of the improv comedy group at Unexpected Productions.
