Early Life – Gabriella Sarmiento Wilson, professionally known by her stage name H.E.R, was born on June 27, 1997, in Vallejo, California, to Kenny and Anges Wilson. She has a younger sister. Her father was a member of the California-based band Urban Bushmen whereas her mother is a homemaker.
Career – Gabi developed an interest in music from her father as he was a member of a band which is why she started learning music at an early age. As a child, she performed in several shows including Today Show where she played the piano for an Alicia Keys song. After this, Gabi marked her acting debut in the Nickelodeon TV film titled School Gyrls.
Well, her interest was in music so she again started performing in shows such as Maury in 2007, Good Morning America, and The View in 2008. At the age of 12, she performed two songs at the ASCAP Awards and was featured on Radio Disney after competing on Radio Disney’s The Next Big Thing where she performed her song titled My Music.
At 14, She was signed a contract by Sony Entertainment. Soon after this, her single was released titled Something to prove under her real name Gabriella Wilson. She then took a break for two years. In late 2016, she released her debut EP titled HER Vol. 1 under her stage name H.E.R. which stood for “having everything revealed”. Initially, the album didn’t get success. So many celebrities including Usher, Pusha T, Rihanna, Alicia Keys, Bryson Tiller, and several others came in support of the EP.
In April 2017, Rihana published an Instagram clip where one of H.E.R.’s tracks ‘Focus’ was playing in the background. The clip received over 5 million views. Then, Gabi’s debut EP H.E.R. Vol 1 was listed in NPR’s “5 Essential R&B Albums You Slept On”. Following her debut EP, she released her H.E.R. Vol 2 on June 16, 2016, including the single Say it Again which became a huge hit among the audience and the album won Best R&B Album and earned four other nominations at the 61sst Grammy Awards.
Additionally, she released H.E.R. Vol 2, The B Sides which was her third EP. In the next year, she released her next EP titled I Used to Know Her: The Prelude and I Used to Know Her: Part 2. Well, she became an overnight star and by that time, her fan following had grown significantly on Instagram and Twitter.
