Early Life – Chan was born on November 29, 1982, in Southward, London, to an Engineer father and pharmacist mother. Her maternal grandparents emigrated from China before the outbreak of the Cultural Revolution. They were the first Chinese family who began living in Greenock, Scotland.

Education – Chan studied at Newstead Wood School for Girls, located in Orpington whose alumni include actress Samantha Baines. After high school, she attended Worcester College, Oxford after her parents’ suggestion, where she studied law. Following her graduation, she developed a keen interest in acting and got enrolled at the prestigious Drama Centre London to pursue a career in acting.

Career – In 2006, she marked her first television appearance in the reality show titled Project Catwalk as a contestant. In the same year, she next appeared in just two episodes of the comedy-horror TV mini-series titled When Evil Calls, where she was seen playing the role of Molly Nelson. Following her TV debut, she marked her film debut in the 2009 mystery-thriller Exam. She next acted as Mia Bennett in an episode of the family drama Doctor Who.

She was then chosen to play the role of Bo in the crime-thriller Pimp. In the 2010 film titled Shanghai, Chan played Shin Shin. In the same year, she bagged two more television appearances as Ivana and Soo Lin Yao in The IT Crowd and Sherlock respectively. Her one more film titled Submarine was released in 2010 where she essayed Kin-Lin.

Her career’s breakthrough role came in 2015 when she was selected to play the protagonist’s girlfriend named Chen-Lin in the French comedy-drama Belles Families. The film was appreciated by the critics and screened at the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival. Following the success of Belles Families, she acted Madame Ya Zhou in the fantasy Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them which earned five BAFTA nominations.

She is best known for portraying Charlotte in the TV show Secret Diary of a Call Girl (2011), Astrid Leong-Teo in Crazy Rich Asians (2018), Elizabeth Hardwick in Mary Queen of Scots (2018), and Minn-Erva in Marvel’s superhero action film Captain Marvel (2019).
