Farahani was born on 10 July 1983 in Tehran, Iran. She is the daughter of Behzad Farahani, who is a theatre director as well as an actor, and Fahimeh Rahim Nia. She discovered her passion for acting by seeing her father and since childhood, she focused on extra activities, likes music, plays, and acting.
In 1997, She began her acting career professionally with the drama film The Pear Tree (Derakht e Golabie) where she played the lead role of Mim (Mitra). Her performance earned her Crystal Roc for Best Actress from the International Section of the 16th Fajr International Film Festival in Tehran. Soon after this, she became a huge star and started getting several offers for films and television projects.
She then featured in some films but due to controversial issues, those movies got banned in Iran. In 2008, she was cast as Aisha in the action thriller film Body of Lies, alongside Leonardo DiCaprio and Russell Crowe.
